Written in Stone Project Visitors

Last week Barr Beacon hosted 19 teachers and 10 students from around Europe for the next phase of our ‘Written in Stone’ project.  The 10 students (5 from Italy and 5 from Spain) were joined by teachers from all European countries involved in the project to meet and discuss future tasks and visits in the coming year.  Barr Beacon pupils hosted a pupil each in their home, immersing them in the English culture, helping them to develop their English language.

Our pupils prepared for the hosting by completing tasks (including building castles out of a range of materials) to meet the objectives set out in the history-based project, for when our partners arrived.  Throughout the week, all pupils and teachers were involved in a range of excursions, visiting Dudley and Warwick Castle and learning all about our more local history with a day at the Black Country Museum.

It was fantastic to see all pupils get along and enjoying the hosting experience, which culminated in a final meal which was attended by all parents, teachers and pupils involved in the project.

Our next journey in the project will involve another 5 pupils travelling to the east coast of Italy in March 2020, to experience the regional history of castles and to learn about ghost stories and the legend that surrounds them.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents for their amazing time, effort and hospitality in making the visit a real success.

CCF Biennial Review

On Monday 16th September, our Combined Cadet Force carried out their Inaugural Biennial Inspection at DTE Swynnerton Training Camp in Stone.

The cadets took part in a number of exercises across the day, such as First Aid Training, Radio and Cyber Training and Rifle Training. The day then ended with a Final Parade, which was conducted by Flt Lt Muller.

The inspection went smoothly and all of our cadets performed to a very high standard. We are extremely proud of how every pupil represented the school and showcased everything that they have accomplished over the last couple of years.

BBC STEM Exploration Day

Pupils from Barr Beacon school took part in a special STEM exploration day at BBC Birmingham. They toured the studios and met the many different employees that help to run the BBC. Highlights of the day included presenting the weather, producing their own radio show and trying out the virtual reality headsets.

The pupils learnt how maths skills are essential for the effective time management of BBC WM and they met sound engineers and network engineers to learn about the opportunities for apprenticeships behind the scenes. It was interesting to discover the different roles and STEM skills that are required to make shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, Doctor Who, Blue Planet and Children in Need.

All pupils enjoyed the day and took home a few souvenirs. Thank you to all of the volunteers at the BBC who made this such a special day for our pupils.

Italian Adventure

15 pupils left school in the early hours of Wednesday morning to start their Italian adventure!

Day 1: We were taken to Naples City, where we had an overground tour of the famous city sites and saw three of the 40 churches in the city. We also had an underground tour of the ancient tunnels and chambers which were used by the Greeks and Romans. We ate fresh Napoli pizza, which was the ideal first meal in Italy. We rounded off the day with a refreshing swim in our hotel pool.

Day 2: What a jam-packed day! We started by climbing Mount Vesuvius. At the crater of the volcano we learnt about past eruptions and how the volcano is monitored. In the afternoon, we visited Pompeii which had been completely covered by an eruption from Mount Vesuvius back in AD79. We were in awe of the well-preserved buildings and were able to see the world’s oldest surviving ‘beware of the dog’ sign. On the evening we went to a Gelateria where we produced and tasted real Italian gelato.

Day 3: Firstly, we visited a buffalo mozzarella farm where we were able to pet the buffaloes and taste mozzarella, cheese and chocolate made with buffalo milk. The pupils really enjoyed petting the buffaloes, who were very friendly and calm.  We then spent the afternoon exploring Ancient Greek ruins and underground natural caves. For our final meal in Italy, we made our own pizzas which were delicious.

Miss O’Connor and Mr Nunn would like to congratulate pupils for their excellent behaviour and participation on the trip. Well done!

GCSE Success!

Barr Beacon School pupils are celebrating an impressive set of GCSE results where there has been a fivefold increase in the number of pupils achieving a grade 9, the government’s new gold standard.

Some of the high achievers who collected a string of 8 and 9 grades included

R. Ghag with three grade 8s and five grade 9s.

D. Kaler with four grade 8s and one grade 9

The results are a culmination of the hard work and focused revision of pupils during their careers at Barr Beacon School. We can’t wait to welcome back our hard-working pupils as sixth form students in September. It’s immensely satisfying to celebrate not only the pupils with the top grades but also those who have made the most progress in their time with us, and for many this success will only continue into the sixth form.

60 Years Celebration Event

Friday 12th July saw Barr Beacon School celebrating its 60th anniversary year, with more than 700 former pupils and teachers returning for a special celebration evening. This included pupils who started Beacon in its first year, 1958, right through to those who only left recently. Current pupils led tours of the school buildings, many of which brought back memories. Early in the evening, entertainment was provided by a troupe of dancers from Key Stage 3 and there was a parade from our RAF Cadet force.

Later, a 20-piece big band, managed by a former Beacon pupil, played an hour of favourites in the Main Hall. This was followed by a two hour set of music from across the decades, curated by our talented resident ‘DJ Mellow’, a pupil in our current Year 10. The evening was a tremendous success and we would like to thank everyone who attended for making it such a special celebration.

Peru - Camps International

Six of our pupils and Miss Smith carried out an expedition to Peru. They began by staying in the city of Cusco before building a community centre from scratch! And that was just in their first week. Here are some fantastic photos they sent us during their trip.

Prom 2019

Friday 28th June saw the sunshine on the beautiful grounds of Nailcote Hall where staff eagerly awaited the arrival of our Year 11 Prom guests. This year brought a range of fast cars and jam-packed limos filled with excited and accomplished young people. Students spent the evening snapping photos in the photo booth, testing their balance on the bucking bronco, pleasing their sweet teeth at the chocolate fountain and even getting a self-portrait drawn by our very talented caricaturist.

Once the sun had gone down, our Prom King and Queen had the duty of starting off the firework display that then led into a party to end all parties with our DJ. A great night was had by all and it will certainly be one to remember. Photos from throughout the evening can be found below.

Students Dig Up School History

We are excited to announce that we have discovered a time capsule, which was buried on the school site in 1996.

The contents of the capsule reveal what the curriculum was like in 1996. Items inside the treasure trove include photographs, textbooks and a floppy disk, which today’s students could barely recognise.

Our Senior Team was chosen to open the capsule. You can watch this, live as it happened, on this video:

We knew there was a time capsule buried on our site, but it was not until we received a photograph from a former teacher that we had any idea where it was located.  This could not come at a better time, with our anniversary celebrations right around the corner: Our school is sixty years old this year and we are having a special evening to commemorate this on Friday 12th July.

We are looking forward to having former pupils and teachers back on site.  Our initial allocation of five hundred tickets sold out rapidly but we have released some more because we know demand is still high.

Stay tuned to our website: Barr Beacon’s Senior Team will shortly be launching a competition to decide what to put in a new time capsule to represent 2019.

And if you recognise any of the students in the original photo (from 1996) – or maybe you are one of them yourself! – please get in touch so you can help us learn more about the time capsule.
