Summer School 2022

Year 6 pupils who are starting at Barr Beacon School this September attended a three-day Academic Summer School at Barr Beacon. This summer school consisted of a blend of academic, creative and sporting sessions. The aim of the Summer School is to provide our new Year 7s with the opportunity to further familiarise themselves with our school and its staff, receive pre-tutoring on topics that they will be studying during the Autumn term, and enable them to engage with children from other primary schools who will be starting Barr Beacon School in September. All 110 pupils were model pupils during these three days, and we were really proud of the way they threw themselves into activities.
Our staff had a wonderful time engaging with our new pupils and the pupils themselves were effusive in their praise for the Summer School.

Leah said “ I made lots of new friends and got to know some of my teachers also”. This was a sentiment repeated by other pupils too and we are pleased that so many new friendships are blossoming amongst our new pupils. When asked how we could make Summer School even better next year Oliver said “ I would not improve Summer School. It was fantastic. I really enjoyed it!" Another pupil simply said, "make it longer".

Arvind typified what we have heard from many other pupils when he said “ I enjoyed Summer School at Barr Beacon and can’t wait to join now.”

We were delighted to receive contact from some of our parents too:

“Thank you so much for pulling this together as I can see how much work has gone into it. Harry said yesterday when I picked him up - “mum, I really can’t wait to start big school now I loved it!”

“My daughter – Priya, attended the 3-day Summer School and absolutely loved it. Thank you so much for allowing this opportunity. She’s very excited to start in September, which is fabulous news!”

“My Daughter has really enjoyed Summer camp! “

A big thank you goes out to our wonderful staff for making Summer School a wonderful experience for our Year 6 pupils. We can't wait to get everyone back together again in September when the new term starts.

Queen’s Baton Relay – Commonwealth Games 2022

We are extremely proud of our Year 13 student Dinuk D-S who completed his leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay ahead of the start of the Commonwealth Games later this week.  Dinuk carried the baton through Dartmouth Park in West Bromwich on Monday 25th July 2022.  Spectators cheered him on along the route.

In February, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee asked us to nominate  students who have made a meaningful contribution to sport and have an inspiring story to tell.  This is Dinuk’s story:

From the age of 2 years, Dinuk showed an interest in tennis and starting playing from a young age.  He spent 8 years practising daily and improving his technique.  At the age of 10 years, this time commitment became difficult as Dinuk was preparing for his 11+ exam and had to attend tutoring sessions.  It was time to pick a new sport and being the grandson of a Sri Lankan cricketer and son of a professional cricket player, Dinuk naturally followed in their footsteps.

His cricket career started at the age of 10 years.  For 3 years he trialed for the county team and enjoyed success at the age of 14.  Since then he has played for Warwickshire U14, Warwickshire U17 and currently plays for Derby’s U18 team.  His commitment to his team involves him training weekly from 7:30pm – 9:30pm (enduring a 2 hour round trip to and from the training ground).  In addition to this, he trains at the local net centre 4 times a week.  His sport has also given him the opportunity to travel to Barbados for a tournament. He is an inspiration to others.  He has run summer camps for 9 – 12 year olds.  In school, he has set up a Sports Society for other sportsmen and women. He is working with them on the Psychology of Sport – how to deal with set-backs and bouncing back.

A truly inspirational young man who gives 100% to his sport without letting his commitment to his A level studies slip.

Work Experience at Halfpenny Airport

Year 12 student Sanvir B is enjoying his work experience with the team at Halfpenny Airport, Wolverhampton.  To escape the sweltering temperatures earlier this week, he enjoyed a flight to Wales and back.  As well as taking in the spectacular views, he learnt about all the things a pilot needs to do to ensure the flight is safe and as smooth as possible.

“It was such a good experience!  I learnt a lot about how the planes are flown and everything you have to look out for during the flight.”

Sports Day 2022

Sports Day 2022 and Commonwealth Games themed day

On Wednesday 13th July 2022 Barr Beacon School held its annual Sports Day. This year it was bigger and better than ever.

Over 300 pupils from all year groups competed in more sports than has ever been seen at a Barr Beacon Sports Day before. In addition to traditional track and field activities, the pupils have spent the last month competing in Handball, Football, Basketball, Badminton and a host of other sports.

Whilst our 300+ competitors were giving their best performances on the track and field, the remaining pupils spent the morning engaging in Commonwealth Games themed lessons which included quizzes, documentaries and the Geography of the Commonwealth.

After lunchtime the Sports Day climax began. The whole school took to the field seated in House Groups to cheer on participants from their Houses. The competition was tight, but Bredon romped to a convincing win, their second in 3 sports days and largely due to their participation points. At one point during the day Clent had closed the gap to a mere 300 points,  but a fine afternoon of track success saw Bredon House run away with the trophy. Despite languishing in 4th position for most of Sports Day, Malvern House managed to climb to third place following some impressive relay running. A mere 10 points seperated 3rd and 4th position.

Final Results table:

Congratulations to all competitors and spectators for their exemplary sportsmanship, behaviour and support of others. Sports Day was a huge success and demonstrated our Beacon Values in action. Huge thank you to the PE and Performing Arts faculty for the hard work they put into this memorable event.

Sixth Form Induction Week

It was a pleasure welcoming back over 120 of our Year 11 students to take part in the Sixth Form Induction Week.  They had taster sessions for their chosen courses, allowing them to get a feel for post-16 life.  We shared information about the mindset required to enjoy success in our Sixth Form, including a strong work ethic, developing into independent learners and always having the highest expectations of themselves.  Our current Year 12 students shared their experiences and offered some valuable advice.  The week ended with a day of Team Building activities which encouraged them to develop their confidence, communication skills and logical thinking. The tasks they took part in were Swamp Cross, Night Rope, Barrel Move, Human Knot and Sheep Herd.  The students enjoyed their week and found it helpful in preparation for September.  The ice-lollies on Friday were very much appreciated too!  We are looking forward to them starting their Key Stage 5 journey with us in September.

Comments from students:

“I learnt that I need to organise my revision early.  Also, I need to take up opportunities in Sixth Form as these will be beneficial for my UCAS application.”

I like how the teachers treat us more like adults and that there is more freedom in the way that we can learn and revise.  I find having smaller classes also makes it easier to engage with the teachers and ask for help.”

“I enjoyed how interactive the lessons were and how they gave a very clear idea about what life in Sixth Form will be like and what A levels are about.”

“It is good to have an understanding of what we will be taught over the years and to have had the chance to cover some of the content this week.”

“I enjoyed the activities that we did as they helped to create a more insightful experience of what next year will be like.”

“I now know that there is a large amount of wider reading that I will need to do in order to be fully prepared for my option choices, ready to start in September.”

“I understand that I need to be very organised from day 1 to prevent feeling overwhelmed and stressed out.”

“I enjoyed exploring the subjects I have picked in more detail and speaking to the current Sixth Formers who were really helpful.”

“Thank you for the enjoyable Team Building Day.”

Loughborough University Residential

Ten lucky Year 10 Barr Beacon pupils are attending a four day residential at Loughborough University. The girls are working in teams of 5 with undergraduates and professors from Loughborough university to design a solution to contemporary global problems. This is a challenge that Ford Motor company give to their own engineers and designers. It all takes place in Loughborough’s state of the art STEMlab.

The girls have been attending lectures about the engineering behind harnessing renewable energy, robotics and other topics. The pupils then apply this information to their own designs and will present their solutions to their global problem at the end of the week. The girls have also had time for lots of fun including a campus treasure hunt, movie nights and a Barbecue.
