Year 7 Birmingham University Science Lectures

Just before the end of 2020, 90 of our Year 7 pupils participated in online Science lectures delivered by Birmingham University staff. These lectures combined topical science with Christmas and so the sessions were entitled ‘Pandemics, past, present and future’ and ‘Is Santa Claus a super spreader?’

The lectures explained the science behind global pandemics and the development of the Covid-19 vaccines. These festive lectures were full of  Christmas themed analogies. Barr Beacon pupils submitted 8 questions to the experts, all of which were answered, and our pupils were singled out for praise due to these contributions.

Our pupils certainly seemed to enjoy the lectures:

  • 96% said the lectures were interesting.
  • 83% said that the lectures made them want to go to university when they were older.
  • 100% said they learned things they didn’t know before.

What our pupils said:

“It was really interesting and I enjoyed it immensely. I hope to do more lectures in the future”

“I found the lecture very interesting and I learnt a lot of new things”.

“It includes fascinating facts, and I would have never thought about how a virus affects our bodies. We also learnt that rabies is more likely to kill you than you surviving/recovering from it. I would have wanted to go to university anyways but now I am more excited to go!”

“I think it was very interesting as it taught me things I didn't know before and it was about a similar subject to something that is currently happening.”

Parent/Carer Careers Newsletter

With the summer holidays approaching, it is a good time for pupils to start exploring their future career options at home. There is an extraordinary amount of resources out there to support you and your child as you navigate their future options, and it can often be overwhelming. We have therefore put together a selection of some of the best resources for you to explore.

Although we would usually be organising big careers events in school such as fairs; assemblies; trips and work experience, these are unfortunately on hold for the safety of your child. However, careers provision is adapting and there are now a wide range of virtual services on offer.

UniFest-2020-2

Year 10: It’s never too soon to start thinking about university

UniFest 2020 is taking place virtually next week (Monday 29th June to Friday 3rd July). Everyone in Year 10 is welcome to take part.

What is UniFest?

UniFest is an online event, run by local universities, which lets you explore university. You will get the opportunity to attend mini taster lectures to see what studying at university is like; you will hear from current students about life at university and there will even be virtual campus tours. Please see the attached poster for more information.

I’m interested. How does it work?

On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday Miss Killick will email everyone in Year 10 a link to an online presentation. You don’t need to access this immediately, as some of you will be in school or attending live lessons and these take priority. You can therefore access the presentations at a time that suits you. The only element you need to access live is the Question and Answer session on Thursday afternoon at 4.00pm.

Keep an eye out for the emails next week.

Year 11 Mock Interviews

On Thursday 23rd and Thursday 30th January, every Year 11 pupil had the opportunity to take part in a mock interview with a local employer. This was a chance for pupils to practise their interview skills and gain feedback in preparation for their real Sixth Form, College and Apprenticeship interviews. Our visitors were very impressed by how polite and prepared our pupils were. The impact of this practice has been evident in the Sixth Form interviews of some pupils, where they have thought carefully about how best to sell their achievements and skills.

Biggest Ever Careers Fair

Barr Beacon School’s Annual Careers Fair was bigger than ever before, with over 80 visitors giving up their time to meet our pupils. During the fair, pupils were able to engage with a range of employers, universities, apprenticeship providers, colleges and training providers.

Visitors came from all over the country, with universities as far-reaching as Belfast, and the careers represented at the Fair spanned a variety of fields such as healthcare, engineering, construction, the forces, hairdressing, the police, technology, defence, funeral care and the civil service. Many visitors were from key employers that reflect the changing needs of the local labour market.
