Sixth Form Induction Week

8th – 12th July 2024

It was a pleasure welcoming back over 90 of our Year 11 students who have applied for a place at Barr Beacon Sixth Form.

The students spent 4 days attending lessons for their chosen courses.  They were also given the opportunity to trial alternative subjects so that they are able to make an informed decision when finalising their choices ready for September.

Our current Year 12 students shared their experience of Sixth Form, giving advice and top tips on how to ensure that they pick the right options, managing the workload, developing independence, managing time effectively, making the most of the opportunities offered and applying for the Lead Role positions.

The week ended with a Team Building Day.  Year 12 students led on the activities which helped develop logical thinking, communication skills, confidence and resilience.  The activities included:  Night Line, Mine Field, Tyre Maths, Nuclear Reactor and Operation Swamp Doctor.  It was heart-warming to see the two year groups working so well together, having fun and building up a rapport ready for the new term.

The students enjoyed the week and commented on how helpful it has been in preparation for September, when they will be starting their Key Stage 5 journey with us.

We are looking forward to seeing them again on GCSE Results Day – Thursday 22nd  August 2024.

Comments from the students:

“The Sixth Form induction week was so useful as it gave me a better understanding of what I will  be doing when I join back in September. It gave me an insight into the subjects that I want to pick for A levels.  The Team Building Day gave me the opportunity to strengthen my relationships with the people in my year group.”

“Today's activities were  fun and enjoyable. It was a very nice way to end the week by bonding with my fellow peers and there was also a fun aspect of competitiveness! Today exceeded my expectation of what I imagined it to be and was definitely the highlight of the week!”

"The Team Building Day was a great.  I liked that we got to work with the current Year 12 students.”

Foxhills Fishery

On Thursday 4th July, Mr. Bullock and Mr. Townsend rewarded our Tigers pupils by taking them to Foxhills Fishery. The pupils had a fantastic day out and learnt a number of new skills, which subsequently led to us catching a lot of fish. Fishing teaches us how to be patient, disciplined and work as part of team, all of which are invaluable skills, which we can apply to school life. Here is a truly amazing picture of the catch of the day!

Year 13 Leavers' Ball

Our Year 13 students gathered at their Leavers’ Ball to celebrate the end of the examination period and to mark the end of their journey with us.

The black-tie event was held in Birmingham on Friday 28th June 2024.  Students were beautifully dressed in their tuxedos and glamorous dresses.

The evening consisted of a drinks reception, a 3-course meal, speeches from our Head Students and a ‘fun’ awards ceremony.  Once all the formalities were over, students enjoyed the 360-degree video booth, the photobooth, showing off their best karaoke performances and dancing the night away to a range of music genres, including some of the old-time favourites!

It was lovely to see the students looking so relaxed post examinations.  We are proud of how hard they have worked and we are looking forward to celebrating with them one last time on Results Day (Thursday 15th August 2024).

Here are a few comments from the students:

“Wow!  The room looks amazing!  I wasn’t expecting this.”

“Thank you for such a great evening!  We seriously had the best night ever!  We had a blast, especially on the karaoke!”

”I really enjoyed Friday night and wanted to thank you Miss, for all the effort that you have put into our year group.”

Barr Beacon VS Grace Academy

Beacon played against Grace Academy on the 19th of June. The game started off with K. Jacques scoring first for Beacon and the score was 1-0. However, Grace Academy came back in the first half and the half ended 5-1 to Grace Academy.

But it was not over...

The second half started and Beacon were not ready to give up. Within 2 minutes, Beacon found the back of the net through C. Turner and the score was now 5-2. With Beacon's pressure building on Grace Academy, the come back was on. With 20 minutes left to go, Beacon found the net again through the right foot of R. Cooper. The Beacon lads were coming back with a vengeance. Time was running out and Grace were still ahead by 2 goals, so Beacon with relentless pressure, managed to find the Back of the net yet again!

This relentless pressure paid off as C. Turner found the back of the net yet again and the players were full of excitement and determination to claw this back. One more goal would send the game to penalties. Unthinkably,  late in the game, Grace Academy found a new sense of purpose and piled on the pressure. However, with the strong back line of K. Shergill, A. Hadley, J. Gillon and R. Silver, they were able to quickly put a stop to each attack.

In the dying minutes of the game, K. Jacques won a penalty and this was the chance Beacon needed to send the game to penalties. Calm and composed, C. Turner stepped up to the challenge and smoothly slotted the ball in the back of the net, to tie the game and secure his hat trick.

We had made it to penalties. The order was chosen and Beacon were confident they could secure the victory.

Beacon took their first penalty and the hat trick hero stepped up to the spot. Without any doubt, C. Turner put Beacon up 1-0. The pressure was on Grace and Barr Beacon pupils put faith in S. Bushell who stepped up as GK for the penalties. Unfortunately, with a diving effort, the ball slipped through the tip of his fingers. The score was now 1-1. S. chahal stepped up next and calmly put it past Grace Academy’s keeper to take us to 2-1. The pressure was back on Grace’s number 10 and as he stepped up, S. Bushell pushed it around the post giving the advantage to Beacon. The score was still 2-1. A. Hussain stepped up next to try and give Beacon a bigger advantage. However, with a diving effort from the keeper he saved the shot and this gave Grace the opportunity to get back into the shoot-out. Their winger stepped up and smashed it into the bottom left corner, making the score 2-2. We were down to the last 2 penalty takers from each team and the next penalty was taken by K. Shergill. With a nonchalant walk up to the ball he calmly slotted it into the back of the net. The score was now 3-3 and Beacon had the chance to win the game. The pressure was rising and Grace wanted to win the game with the next 2 penalties. The captain stepped up and put it past S. Bushell to level to score and put the pressure on our next penalty taker. K. Jacques stepped up to take the final kick for Beacon and there was nothing but composure. With a powerful strike, Kai slotted the ball into the bottom right corner giving Graces goalkeeper no chance to get down to the ball. The final result on penalties was 4-3 and Barr Beacon were champions!!!

Inspiring the Black Country 2024

Year 8 pupils visited a large Careers Fair in Wolverhampton, where they met with hundreds of employers and discovered new careers through interactive exhibits. Pupils were able to film a news report with the BBC, discover how special effects are created for film with Real SFX, change a tyre with Nacro, pull a pint with Marston’s, win treats for matching aircraft with Collins Aerospace, learn to play the drums with Wolverhampton Music Service, practise CPR with the NHS and even get their own fake bruise with Dudley College’s TV makeup experts.

Pupils said:

“I really enjoyed it. There was so much to do.”

“My favourite part was filming with the BBC. I was a bit nervous hearing my voice back though.”

“I have learnt about lots of jobs today but in a fun way.”

Sports Day 2024

On Friday 21st June Barr Beacon School made the relatively short journey to take part in the annual Sports Day at Alexander Stadium. The day commenced with all participants taking to the track to run a lap to help them soak up the atmosphere and help prepare them for the events that lay ahead.

Throughout the day students displayed remarkable skill and determination in every track and field event ranging from the fast pace of the 400m to the explosiveness of the shot put with pupils working tirelessly to contribute to the ongoing house points total.

However, what made the day truly special was the unwavering camaraderie and sportsmanship on shown across all participants and Houses alike, as all pupils were cheered during their events regardless of the colour of their bib.

Special mentions must go to the following pupils who went above and beyond what was expected of them as they were able to go the extra mile and win several events throughout the day showing their dedication and resilience to do all they could to secure the house cup.

  • V.Sandhar (200m, Long Jump, High Jump)
  • A.Foster (100m, 200m, 400m)
  • D.Trow (400m, 800m, 1500m)
  • R.Child (400m, 800m, 1500m)
  • A.Edwards-Manning (100m, Long Jump, Javelin)

By the time Sports Day had come to an end it was clear that it has been an unwavering success with Bredon being crowned the Sports Day Champions.

The success of Sports Day is a testament to the exceptional sportsmanship of each and every pupil that took part, either physically or within the stands. Each pupil and member of staff played a vital role in creating an unforgettable event. Roll on Sports Day 2025.
