Spring Blog- Is AI good for us?

Z Inman, Digital Media Lead

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a topic is highly prominent in the modern day world and its usage is nothing far from widespread.

AI is code. Humans have to teach technology this code, as if it was a child, feeding it data and knowledge that it can learn from to create something new.

The Benefits of AI

We are seeing a lot more usage of AI within day-to-day life, for example within smartphones, such as with live translation or assisting people in foreign countries if they need support with a basic conversation.

Another major benefit is within healthcare, leading to one of the largest publicly available x-ray datasets of scans of the torso and lung area, from more than 30,000 patients. These were fed to AI (with the patient’s permission) to learn patterns, so that it could detect small details that a doctor could not, and much faster, helping to keep us safer and healthier.

One of the many positives of AI is its usage within security systems, such as Ring Doorbell, who use AI for motion tracking and object detection to let you know who is at your front door.

There is certainly a bright side to AI, one full of ingenuity and interesting developments that are made almost every day. AI could be classed as a brain in tis won entity, hardwired to do one task, constantly learning patterns and pathways that assists itself to reach its goal faster, leading to exponential growth in knowledge and decreased processing time. The more it learns, the quicker it adapts.

Can you spot the AI errors?

Although AI is developing rapidly, you can sometimes spot clues in its errors.

AI bots are able to take any given prompt, and by utilising a massive set of data from the internet, can create a completely unique image that takes pieces of data and makes them into an amalgamation of that data. For example, it could create an image that look like this:

The fact that AI imagery, in such an early age, could get to this degree of accuracy, is amazing. However there are some major errors. Can you sport them?

The right tooth is noticeably larger. This is an issue with data being mixed and mashed, creating objects larger than necessary and in directions that make it difficult to generate.

Take a closer look at the woman’s eyes. Both of the eyes should be similar sizing and colouring; you can see that they are  different from each other.

Additionally, we see a mismatching of a reflection on the surface of the water. Reflections matching objects are difficult for AI as it has separate references for each and cannot use photoshopping techniques or methods of imagery that we use.

Did you notice a difficult-to-identify object that seems to have morphed to create a confusing and physically impossible object?

And what about the air around the woman’s hair seemingly morphing and warping around the shapes of the loose and open strands? Additionally, the tiling in the background of the photo is inconsistent. The hardness of each of the lines is not the same, and it would seem that most of the colour has begun to blend together.

Problems with AI

Although it brings many wonderful advances for the future, issues have started to emerge.

One of the biggest concerns is the loss of jobs. For example, we are seeing more and more usage of AI within advertising and graphic design, taking away from the talented artists and graphic designers that could have previously designed these. A recent example of this is the iconic Coca Cola Christmas advert, that was made completely with the use of AI in 2024.

There are also concerns about the safety of AI, with countless news stories about driverless car malfunctions, for example.

Numerous legal battles will arise with the data from artists’ work being copied or even people deciding to claim themselves to be ‘AI artists’ when they have put near zero effort into creating their image. You get no sense of achievement or accomplishment from the usage of AI.

The reliance on AI to most seems like something that will never occur, but to myself and many others, it is a scary reality that could come to fruition. Much alike to many dystopian films, books and TV series, we are seeing a real-life version of this, with each of us having a front row ticket.

Conclusions

Ultimately AI has enormous benefits and, if you enjoy studying STEM subjects, then there could be many opportunities to engineer or create some exciting advances to help people in the future. We must also balance this by being aware of the problems AI causes and working honestly and ethically as we move forward.

Music Studio Visit

A group of Year 9 pupils had the opportunity to visit a music studio as a taster for BTEC music and to learn from professionals within the music industry. The studio team delivered a ‘question and answer’ session and a studio tour before splitting the pupils into bands to rehearse and perform to one another.

All pupils represented the music department and school superbly. Pupils commented on how happy they were with the trip, which was evident as they were all humming the Seven Nation Army riff (the song they performed in the studio) on the journey back!

Holocaust Survivor

Year 12 and 13 historians and Year 12 sociologists took part in a webchat with Holocaust survivor Mala Tribich to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau.

Mala spoke about her experiences of Nazi persecution following the occupation of Poland in 1939. Her message, 80 years after the Holocaust, is to be vigilant and to call out injustice, linking to the Beacon Values of ‘Act Responsibly’ and ‘Equal to Everyone’. She urged students to learn from the past to ensure that there is a different future.

All-Schools-scaled

Trust Wide Football Tournament

This week we hosted our first ever trust wide football competition between all our schools. The competition was hosted at Etone College and utilised the outstanding facilities and Football Academy provision to implement a very competitive and fun filled event. The day consisted of high quality and competitive football from Year 8 pupils from each of our schools. Our pupils showcased sportsmanship of the highest quality and their passion for football shone through as pupils enjoyed playing and meeting people from across the trust.

It was evident as soon as the group stages started, the games were going to be decided with a bit of magic, an error, or the dreaded penalties. The group stages ended Bloxwich Academy, Dame Elizabeth Cadbury, Etone College and Turves Green Boys’ School progressed to the semi-final stage.

The 7th and 8th placed playoff was a competitive affair which saw the Etone B team victorious over Wednesfield Academy on penalties. The 5th and 6th placed game saw Barr Beacon win the game 1-0. In the semi-finals there was very little difference between the four schools in what was a very competitive high-quality game and again the dreaded penalty shoot-out came into force, Etone College and Bloxwich Academy progressed to the final and Turves Green and Dame Elizabeth went into the third and fourth playoff game

The 3rd and 4th playoff game was a very exciting game that saw both teams miss chances and played some free-flowing exciting football, unfortunately both keepers were to remain unbeaten, and Dame Elizabeth took the third place on penalties. The final consisted of Bloxwich Academy and Etone College in which was anyone’s to win after the two teams had played out a 0-0 draw earlier in the day. Etone started quickly and scored an absolute thunderbolt into the top corner to make it 1-0, Bloxwich to their credit competed fiercely and played some fantastic football and deserved their equaliser to make it 1-1. With both teams going for the win Etone caught Bloxwich on the break to open them up and scored 3 late goals to take the game and the title 4-1.

A huge well done to all pupils and staff involved and a big thankyou to all those that contributed to the event. We are looking forward to getting the next event booked into the calendar to see where the shield will end up next year.

Millionaires Club

In a remarkable achievement, 14 pupils have been invited to the prestigious "Millionaire's Club" after reaching an extraordinary milestone — reading half a million words in one term. This accomplishment highlights their dedication, passion for reading, and commitment to self-improvement. The "Millionaire's Club" is a recognition reserved for pupils who demonstrate exceptional reading habits, and to mark their success, the pupils were invited to a special celebration — the "Millionaire's Breakfast." Held in the school’s iCentre, the breakfast’s menu was simple yet indulgent: a comforting hot chocolate paired with a flaky pastry. In addition to this tasty treat, pupils also received a Millionaire’s certificate and a token for the book vending machine. Congratulations to all the Millionaires and we hope that this programme will motivate other pupils to read more.

BCDH Workshop

On Thursday 9th January, all of the Year 10 and Year 11 BTEC Dancers took part in the Black Country Dance Hub Careers day.   The day involved pupils taking part in 4 exciting workshops with dance companies, colleges and universities and learning about all of the future career pathways Dance can offer.   Barr Beacon School was very lucky to get a workshop with Motionhouse, Liverpool institute of Performing Arts, Fabric and BOA.

Pupils also were able to walk round the ‘Dance Marketplace’ which included Universities and Colleges that offered Dance courses in the area and beyond. Our Barr Beacon Dancers were fantastic ambassadors for the school by asking many questions and getting involved in every workshop. Mrs Downes and Mrs Parkes were incredibly proud of the dancers and their professionalism -  they were all a credit to the school, demonstrating our Beacon values.
