English Schools Swimming Competition

On Friday 30th September Barr Beacon travelled to Bromsgrove High School to compete in the English Schools Swimming competition.

At this event Barr Beacon would be up against eight private schools meaning that the standard of this competition was high.

Barr Beacon submitted 3 teams for the event, a Year 8 girls team, Year 10 boys team and a Year 10 girls team.

The Year 8 girls team came 4th in their events with a particular good leg from Hollie.

The Year 10 girls team which had Year 9 girls participating in it came 6th in their events. Ella who started the individual medley race finished her leg in 1st place.

The Year 10 boys team came 3rd overall. Henry in Year 8 stepped up to swim two years above himself and had put the team in a good position achieving 2nd place at the end of his leg.

Overall, this was an extremely good event for the Barr Beacon swim team, with a high level of competition present. All swimmers swam excellently and represented the school in a very positive manner.

Summer School 2022

Year 6 pupils who are starting at Barr Beacon School this September attended a three-day Academic Summer School at Barr Beacon. This summer school consisted of a blend of academic, creative and sporting sessions. The aim of the Summer School is to provide our new Year 7s with the opportunity to further familiarise themselves with our school and its staff, receive pre-tutoring on topics that they will be studying during the Autumn term, and enable them to engage with children from other primary schools who will be starting Barr Beacon School in September. All 110 pupils were model pupils during these three days, and we were really proud of the way they threw themselves into activities.
Our staff had a wonderful time engaging with our new pupils and the pupils themselves were effusive in their praise for the Summer School.

Leah said “ I made lots of new friends and got to know some of my teachers also”. This was a sentiment repeated by other pupils too and we are pleased that so many new friendships are blossoming amongst our new pupils. When asked how we could make Summer School even better next year Oliver said “ I would not improve Summer School. It was fantastic. I really enjoyed it!" Another pupil simply said, "make it longer".

Arvind typified what we have heard from many other pupils when he said “ I enjoyed Summer School at Barr Beacon and can’t wait to join now.”

We were delighted to receive contact from some of our parents too:

“Thank you so much for pulling this together as I can see how much work has gone into it. Harry said yesterday when I picked him up - “mum, I really can’t wait to start big school now I loved it!”

“My daughter – Priya, attended the 3-day Summer School and absolutely loved it. Thank you so much for allowing this opportunity. She’s very excited to start in September, which is fabulous news!”

“My Daughter has really enjoyed Summer camp! “

A big thank you goes out to our wonderful staff for making Summer School a wonderful experience for our Year 6 pupils. We can't wait to get everyone back together again in September when the new term starts.

InComm Training - STEM Activity Day

A group of Year 10 pupils visited InComm Training to experience a day in the life of an apprentice. They started with a tour of the facilities and learnt all about the apprenticeship pathway into engineering careers. They then split into competing teams, taking part in a practical workshop. Pupils designed, built and tested their own mechanical devices, examining the use of fluid power to lift and move objects. The project not only allowed pupils to experience what it might be like to work as a future engineer, but it also gave them the opportunity to develop key employability skills of teamwork, communication and problem solving. The winning teams’ mechanical arm is pictured.

Golf Championship

J Donoghue in Year 10 has been selected to represent Barr Beacon and Staffordshire in the English Schools Boys Under 16 Golf Championship.

It is a huge achievement to be selected to play as it is an England Golf National Competition and the Handicap requirement was very low.

The championship was held at Walsall Golf Club and J. Donoghue made the top 15 in the ESGA Under 16 Boys' Championship 2021 on Monday 19th July 2021, White Tees, Walsall Golf Club. An excellent achievement.

Sports Fixtures Return!

On 16th June, the Year 7 girls football team played a home fixture against Bloxwich. It was a very warm afternoon but a fantastic setting for having lots of fun! The girls split into four teams and played four games in total. There were wins, losses, draws and even a penalty shoot-out.

The first Beacon Team finished in 2nd place whilst the other finished in 3rd. A very enjoyable afternoon again and another opportunity for the girls to play – many of these girls had never played before!

Report from pupil C. Nephawe: “This game was great. We had 6-a-side for each game (4 games). The goal keepers did really well. We had at least a couple of star players. I really enjoyed playing”

A huge thank you to the staff that came to support (Mrs Brazier, Mr Brennan, Mr Phillips, Mrs Gwatkin, Mr Murphy and Miss Poynton). The girls loved seeing their teachers cheer them on.

Please congratulate the year 7 girls on their efforts:
