The Turing Scheme
International Experiences
Providing our pupils opportunities to learn about our world
Our international programme is at the heart of Barr Beacon School and we are proud to develop our pupils into successful, confident and resilient individuals. We know that our pupils need to leave our school with more than just academic credentials: an exploration of the wider world that we are part of is essential to ensuring our pupils are well rounded future citizens.
Through our curriculum offer, we prioritise the discovery of
- culture
- communities
- creativity
- careers
- compassion
Our policy and strategy are carefully curated to ensure that all pupils can participate in our international programme and this equitable approach is at the heart of all we do.
We have a long history of working with schools in other countries around the world to allow our pupils opportunities to build friendships with their peers overseas. Many of our staff have lived abroad and share this information with their pupils.
We offer a variety of international opportunities, both paid and grant-funded to ensure that all pupils who want to travel abroad have the opportunity to do so. You can find out more about our Trust’s participation in the Turing Scheme here.
In 2026-2027, our pupils will have the opportunity to ski in Italy, explore the Christmas markets of Cologne, see the battlefields of Belgium and practice their French in Paris. Our Sixth Form can gain valuable experience for their futures through volunteering in a South African monkey sanctuary. Selected pupils will also participate in Matrix Academy Trust’s Turing Scheme offer, which this year will visit The Netherlands (Year 7), Spain (Year 8), Poland (Year 9), Japan (Year 10) and China (Year 12).
Our character education programme, Beacon Values, embeds a focus on international events, celebrations and beliefs. Through PSHE and school assemblies, pupils learn about Black History Month, LGBTQ history around the world, European Day of Languages Staff and pupils share topics they are passionate about through these House assemblies.
Year 12 also have the opportunity to participate in the European Youth Parliament, which brings students together to debate the issues of our time. It is an apolitical, youth-led organisation active in over 33 countries across Europe. This debate competition aims to inspire and empower young people. We are very proud of the success of last year's entrants.
